 Students ... Campus Life

Article by Arden & Dan.

Life on campus generally begins as students start to arrive at about 8:00. Parents drop off most students, but some make their own way to school by walking, biking or driving. Students hang out around the lockers, getting in the mood for school. When the first bell rings, they make their way to class.

The time between classes allows students five minutes of freedom, but most move to another of the four main locations on campus. These areas are lower campus, the gym, the middle school building, and the high school strip. Some students use this time to socialize, but they may end up late for their next class.

Midmorning, students get a break. For 15 minutes, students crowd around the student center and the Junior class candy stand. The Student Council and the Junior class raise money by selling food to the students. Break is also a prime time for relaxing, eating, and socializing. "Break allows us to wind down and eat snacks," says Caleb, a high school student.

When the eleventh bell of the day sounds, the students go eat. "I eat at my friend's house for lunch everyday and it's a great bonding time along with great food," Rachel raves. Although the senior class can eat off campus, the rest of the students either bring their own food or eat down in the cafeteria. Students generally use the first 15 minutes to eat, then the last 20 to talk while sitting around white tables that overlook the ocean.

After school the campus swarms with students who rush out of their classes at the sound of the bell. This is a time for students not only to relax from schoolwork, but also to take part in social and extracurricular activities.

Dalat International School provides various activities, such as sports, intramurals and clubs. Many high school students are involved in sports, which may include basketball, soccer, volleyball, or track and field, depending on the season. Sports may take up the majority of a student's 'after school' life. "Sports are great because they give you a break from homework and time to be with people who are not in your class," says a student involved in volleyball.

For many middle school students, Tuesday after school consists of a fun time of Intramurals. Here students may enjoy friendly games against one another, whether it be in basketball or indoor soccer. In relation to intramurals, one middle school boy says, "Intramurals keeps us active in sports, and it is also a time where we can have fun with our friends."

Along with sports, there are many clubs in which students may participate after school. Some of these clubs include drama, CO2 car racing, and bug club. "Clubs at Dalat are enjoyable activities that help you  learn outside of the classroom," says Christina, a student at Dalat School who participates in a sign language club called Hiz Handz and the Taekwon-do club.

For many students, after school may mean a time to socialize with their friends. This takes places all over campus including the white tables overlooking the ocean, basketball court, or the canteen. A dorm student says, "After school is a perfect time for me to loosen up and just hang out with my friends."
