Eckman-Smith Dorm is the only off-campus dorm for students
at Dalat. Those who live there
affectionately call it “Smeckman Dorm”.
The students are a mix of those who lived in Smith Dorm a few years
ago and those who lived in Eckman Dorm before its buildings were renovated
into elementary classrooms.
Uncle Larry and Aunt Kathy are the dorm parents of a great group of kids.
The house, located in a residential area, is made up of a
one-bedroom apartment for the dorm parents, seven dorm bedrooms with
attached bathrooms, a study room with seven computers which have internet
access, a living room, and a kitchen.
A small outdoor basketball court and a ping pong table are available
for recreation. The students in the dorm appreciate the feel of home after a
day at school. National staff
workers keep the house, yard, and laundry clean.
The school day starts with a knock on each door at 7:00,
followed by breakfast, and daily preparations for departure for the campus
at 8:00. Rides are provided by
the dorm dad after school at designated times which vary according to
extra-curricular activities.
The time after supper on each school night is used for homework, snacking,
socializing, and our weekly “Share and Prayer” time.
Weekends find many of the students shopping at nearby
malls, or hanging out on campus with their friends.
A few prefer to sleep in, and take it easy at home.
The dorm family attends worship services on Sunday mornings at
Penang
International Church, and then enjoys a meal out afterward.

Eckman-Smith Dorm is a home away from home for the students who attend DIS.
