Dorm Staff Profiles
Our staff team consists of five dorm parent couples, one dorm assistant, a nurse and a residence supervisor couple. These enthusiastic and nurturing Christian men and women are committed to making each student’s stay at Dalat a positive and enriching experience.

Brian and Valerie Weidemann, alumni of Dalat from the class of 1986, came to Dalat as dorm parents in 2001 and have been dorm parents in three of the four dorms: Ziemer, Chandler and Jaffray Dorm where they currently serve. They have led the boarding program in the role of residence supervisors since May of 2004 offering support, training and accountability to the boarding staff team. Brian and Val have two grown children, Bethany and Ben, who grew up at Dalat from early elementary through graduation
Before coming to Penang in 2001, Brian and Valerie attended Wheaton College in IL, USA. Valerie received a Bachelor of Arts in Christian Education; she has worked as a writer and editor in Christian publishing and served as an Early Childhood Director in their local church. Brian studied Physical Education and then served in law enforcement for 10 years.
The Weidemanns have served as Jaffray Dorm Parents since 2010. As residence supervisors, Brian and Val provide ongoing support for dorm parents and dorm students. They meet weekly with the dorm staff team, weekly or bi-weekly with each individual staff member and monthly with the dorm council which consists of student reps from each dorm. They also serve as Dalat DIScovery Coordinators meeting weekly with DIScovery students and organizing trips to the field.
Brian represents the boarding program on several committees, including School Leadership Team, School Management Team, and Special Services Team.

Jonas and Mary Hawk came to Dalat as dorm parents in August 2011. Mary attended Dalat for seven years herself and graduated with the class of 1992. She lived in three of our dorms as a boarding student when her parents were missionaries in India and her parents were also dorm parents here from 1989-1993. Mary worked at Dalat as the Special Services Coordinator from 1998-2000. She has a BA in Special Ed and MA in Psychology Counseling. She worked as a counselor in private practice for the eight years prior to coming to Dalat in 2011. Mary enjoys coaching, mentoring and working with youth.
Jonas has a BA in English/Education and MA in Liberal Arts. He has participated in missions trips, ministered in camp and inner city settings, as well as served as an English, Math and Science teacher in Christian schools in the States, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. Jonas is gifted in teaching, discipleship and worship ministries. Both have been involved in college-age residence life ministry and feel strongly called to cross-cultural youth ministry. Their children’s names are Levi and Lyric Rose.

Eddie and Becky Jenkins, from North Carolina, USA, have ministered at Dalat since August 2009. Eddie and Becky both demonstrate a vibrant, mature faith in the Lord Jesus and desire to serve Him in the role of dorm parents at Dalat; God’s call on their hearts is compelling and inspiring. Their daughter, Jazzy, and son, Nehemiah, live in the dorm with them.
They also have a powerful testimony of how God used the illness and loss of their son Mason to teach them how to live with an eternal perspective and fully dependent on God. The kids in the dorm find them both very relational and passionate about extending God’s love to others.

The Mayo Family--Allen & Debbie, Hayli & Heidi--moved from Greenville, North Carolina (USA) to Penang, Malaysia in May of 2011. Allen and Debbie have celebrated over two decades of marriage, and 20 years in full-time Christian ministry.
Hayli (15) and Heidi (11) have been students at Dalat since arriving in Penang. The Mayo’s value a solid-work and study ethic, but believe in playing hard as well. They enjoy travel, athletics, a festive, family atmosphere, reading, and anything Apple. Mentoring adults and students alike for 20 years, first as Youth Pastors, and then as Lead Pastors is a part of Allen and Debbie's dossier. Debbie's work history with students also includes a career in the largest Orthodontic and Pediatric Dentistry in the state of North Carolina.

Barb Nichols and her husband, Nick, have served at Dalat since 2010. Barb holds a BS degree in Education from Nyack College (NY, USA) and has over twenty years of experience teaching English to international students at the collegiate level. At Dalat, Barb has worked in the Guidance Office as the College and Testing Coordinator and co-taught a Bible class. She is also involved in the Penang community through her part-time position as the Educational Advisor with the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE). In August of 2012,
Barb joined the residence life team as Assistant Dorm Parent. Barb is well suited for the role as her love for youth has spanned many years, including involvement in youth ministry at their C&MA home church in Ohio, USA. Barb works alongside the Jenkins in Chandler Dorm and the Weidemanns in Jaffray Dorm. She and her husband also provide dorm coverage when the dorm parents take their mid-semester fall breaks.
|Residence Life Assistant|
Heather Nichols, from Indiana, USA, has served as Assistant Dorm Parent at Dalat since May 2011. She was raised in a Christian home and grew up in Christian & Missionary Alliance churches. She has a BA in Public Health and a MS in Environmental Science. Her work experience reveals her love for ministering to kids and youth: she has served as a substitute teacher, summer camp counselor, after school kids programs teacher, Bible study leader for Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, and university ministries coordinator.
She also has cross cultural experience as she led many missions trips, worked in Guatemala doing public health and traveled through Africa and Europe while living on and ministering from a Mercy Ship. She works alongside the Hawks in Jackson Dorm and the Youngs in Ziemer Dorm, in addition to providing administrative support to the whole boarding program..
