DIRECTOR'S MESSAGE

Improve Your Serve

"I don't know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know. The only ones among you who will be truly happy will be those who have sought and found how to serve."

Albert Schweitzer

On a web page I visited recently it promoted its “product” by asking the following questions:

Are you ready to . . .
Touch a life?
Strengthen communities?
Make a difference?
Lead the way?
Change the world for the better

The website belonged to the Corporation for National and Community Service and their “product” was community service. On that same web page they listed the following benefits of getting involved in community service:

·         Connect with your community.

·         Conserve funds for charities, nonprofits and faith-based and other community organizations by contributing your time.

·         Share your skills and gain new ones.

·         Develop self-esteem and self-confidence.

·         Meet new people from all walks of life.

·         Enhance your resume and make important networking contacts.

·         Promote a worthwhile activity.

·         Feel needed and valued.

·         Experience something new.

·         Serve your school and community.

In 2009 the 9th grade students will be part of the first class at Dalat to be asked to participate in community service as a requirement for graduation. Although this will be something new for Dalat, schools all across North America have been incorporating community service for years. The state of Maryland and the cities of Chicago and Miami all require their public school students to be involved in community service.

At Dalat we believe that students giving back to their community is part of “Education for Life.” In a recent study it was found that a majority of students involved in community service did so because it was modeled for them by their parents, church, school, etc. The study also found that 75% of adults involved in community service had been involved in it during their youth. For those reasons and many others Dalat wants to make community service part of school life.

Throughout the 2008-2009 school year Dalat will be researching and developing the procedures and policies surrounding this new expectation. At different times during the year we will be informing parents and students of what the plans are for the program. If you have any thoughts, opinions, or ideas regarding community service, please do not hesitate to contact me or any one of the other school administrators.

Have a great mid-semester break!

Director

SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENT

School Offices Closed on Monday, 31 March

Please be advised that the Dalat International School office and finance office will be closed on Monday, 31 March. These offices will resume operation on Tuesday, 1 April. Have a wonderful week off next week!

Campus Closed March 30th – April 6th

The Dalat campus is closed during the mid semester break. Parents can come to pick up books from the library (see notice below) or to come to the office but because there will not be any dorm or teaching staff around for supervision during this time students will not have access to the campus.

IOWA TESTS OF BASIC SKILLS

The Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) is a battery of standardized tests that our students in gr. 1-9 take each year. The tests are scheduled for the week of April 14-18. A letter with more information about the tests will be sent to you this week. (Elementary students will bring them home in their Friday folders. Middle school students will receive them from their SAT leaders. Students in gr. 9 will have their letters sent in the mail.) Please ensure that your child does not miss school during this week.

There is no need for your child to study for these tests. Having a good night of sleep and eating a healthy breakfast is all they need to be prepared. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your son or daughter’s guidance counselor. (Elementary – Mrs. Jacki Steinkamp, jsteinkamp@dalat.org; Middle School – Mr. James Allen, jallen@dalat.org; Grade 9 – Mr. Tim Parsons, tparsons@dalat.org)

SCIENCE FAIR

Science Fair – Mark your calendars

Please note that due to a conflict with the Iowa Test of Basic Skills, the science fair date has been moved.  It will now be held on Monday the 28th of April.  This year’s theme is “Now U Know”.

FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR

Greetings Sports Fans!

Well, it is true that to many, March Madness means basketball…& it can! But here at Dalat, especially this 2008 year, it means Softball, Volleyball & State T&F! Read on:

MSSPP March Madness 2008

U18 Girls Volleyball Tues 25th: Lisa Munson & Shauna Archer ventured on a 2 game road swing to Hamid Khan losing to Convent Green Lane 25-5; Winning over Phor Tay 25-19 which earned them MSSPP playoff rights for the first time in many years & certainly this millennium. Wed the girls defeated Balik Pulau 25-23, earning a spot in the semi final where they lost to the always strong Union, 25-7; This means the girls have 4th place in this returning year! Well done ladies & of course thanks to their coaches who are rather pleased with the results!

MSSPP Softball: Games were played at the KWSP Center of Excellence – Westland School. Mark Sasse, Bob Davis, Shauna Archer, Patrick Rogers & Dennis Tyas managed 3 teams & 8 games in 3 days! What a crew! Results:

·         Mon 24th U18 Boys Tanku Abdul Raman 7-Dalat 1; Telok Kumbar 4-Dalat 2; Penang Free 10-Dalat 2;

·         Tues 25th U18 Girls Dalat 6-Convent Dato Keramut 5; Dalat 5-Sungei Nebong 3; Telok Kumbar 20-Dalat 0; With a 2-0 record & the Silver Medals in Penang Island District, coaches & team are bound for State competition sometime in April over on the Mainland. Very nice career start!

·         Wed 26th U15 Girls – Dalat 13-Telok Kumbar 2; Dalat 13-Convent Dato Keramut 6; With this undefeated record it means that the girls are officially Penang Island District Champs. Also heading for State! Not bad for their 1st year eh! Way to go girls & congrats also to their coaching team. Well done!

State T&F Competition Batu Kawan Stadium:

Joshua Watson did quite well in his 1st ever State High Jump competition but since he was the youngest in his category he did not make the medal round this time. Angela Steiert advances to the 100M Hurdles Final on Friday + the 200M Hurdles Final on Thurs am; Frances Wong advances to the 400M Final on Thursday pm & she also defends her State High Jump on Friday along with Theresa & Margaret, both in the 100M Final but different age categories!

It is a proud father telling you that Angela managed to capture the coveted Pentathlon Championship Gold Medal with 1,560 pts on Wed; this is her 1st attempt & since she is only U15 in an open event, she can compete in this event for the next 3 years! Way to go Ang!J

*******************

U18 Girls B’Ball: Our girls defeated our Youngster friends 75 - 45 last weekend.

U18 Boys B’Ball: Chung Ling visited Dalat for a rematch of sorts on Wed & this time the score was 55-25. Boys will also host a group from Air Itam Thurs, 5:30.

Dalat Hosts U18 Basketball Island competition April 7th-18th: 23 boys & 7 girls teams will be visiting our campus for 2 weeks. My son Drew & I, plus Kerry Mahoney & Tim Steinert have volunteered to help with the multitude of games that need to be officiated! If you have any inclination to help out with the tourney, please contact me & we will find something to suit your talents! Dave Loehden is once again our Head of Security!

Boys: Mon 7th 5:00 Vs Haji Zainul Abidin; Fri 11th: Vs Penang Free;

Girls: Tues 8th: 3:00 Vs Sungei Ara; Thurs 10th: 2:00 Vs Convent Green Lane; Mon 14th: 9:00 Vs Union; Playoffs for boys begin Mon & for Girls Wed. CU there lah!

Remember: State Tourney April 29 – May 2 @ Chung Ling Butterworth.

Entertainment is a big part of our student’s lives. Making sure the entertainment is safe is a big job. Every week movies are reviewed by Dalat Staff to let students and parents know what, according to our school’s values, is acceptable entertainment and what should be avoided. These reviews are to be used only as a guide for your entertainment. I list features of the movie that you may be uncomfortable with so that you can make a wise choice. Keep in mind that some are appropriate for older age groups but because of certain intense situations may not be appropriate for younger viewers. I have included the US Rating as well as the Malaysian Rating. I use the website Christian Spotlight on Entertainment for input on reviews.
