Campus Development

Finishing the Task Campaign 2017

Finishing the Task Logo

To complete Dalat’s campus development plan in 2018 and continue Dalat’s great legacy we are tasked to raise the final RM 1.5 million by the end of 2017, part of RM 4 million to complete the plan. This fundraising contribution is only 15% of what is needed to renovate the entire campus to educate Dalat students for the next thirty years.

Dalat’s 88 year history includes a legacy of great education, preparing children for life, love, care, guidance, and hope that must continue to the next generation!

“Since my youth, God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds. Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.”
– Psalm 71: 17 & 18, The Bible

Continuing the Legacy – Finishing the Task

Look how far we have come! In 2015 Dalat signed an agreement to secure our campus location until 2043. Immediately, work began on the CASTLE in 2016. This wonderful building has transformed the campus not only visually but also in the quality of teaching rooms and facilities, such as the hugely expanded library, the new science and art classrooms, computer rooms, and student support center, that are now available to Dalat children. In 2017 the dorm was completed, providing much needed improved living facilities to dorm students and allowing us to proceed with the campus development plan. The generosity of many has brought the Dalat community to where we are now.

This final stage of development has begun. The new high school, administration offices, and multi-purpose room are rising before our eyes. This is by far the largest part of the development that will build a modern high school to elevate Dalat’s highest level of education while maintaining its welcoming, family atmosphere.

Education must do more than just keep up with the world; it must shape the future! That is what Dalat International School in Penang, Malaysia, seeks to do, to shape and educate students – future leaders – who will in turn make a positive impact on Malaysia and the world. Dalat graduates are beacons of light in communities all over the world: highly motivated, well-educated, and intentionally instructed to develop good moral character through spiritual grounding and a biblical worldview.

Dalat students are life-long learners, effective speakers and listeners, compassionate givers, good stewards of their resources, seekers of truth and God, and full of wisdom and creativity. These qualities embody Dalat’s core goals, and this upgrade of our campus will allow our students to fully meet their potential to impact the world.

Once completed, this campus development to replace the inadequate, aging facilities with new purpose-built, forward-thinking learning spaces will have cost over RM 28 million. The majority of this money has come from the good stewardship of current and past school leadership who, over the last twenty years, have planned well by being prudent with school funds.

When this all started in 2015, RM 3.5 million was needed to finish the campus development plan. Dalat is a non-profitable organization made up of a community who is passionate about education and developing young people. By 2016 over RM 2 million had been generously given to complete the first two buildings. In 2017 your help is needed to complete this vision.

Please join with us! The goal is to raise the last RM 1.5 million to complete the high school, administration offices, and multi-purpose room by the end of 2017. Will you make an investment in Dalat children and in Penang and give a gift to finish this important task?

Project Objectives

As determined by the Dalat Board of Governors:

  1. The finished product must meet the needs, not the wants, of up to 760 students.
  2. The finished product must be realized without undertaking any activity which threatens the financial solvency or reputation of DIS.
  3. Within the constraints of the project budget, the finished product must:
    1. Maintain the community and family atmosphere.
    2. Be of reasonably high quality.
    3. Be as ecologically friendly and energy efficient as possible.
    4. Be as cost effective to maintain as possible.
    5. Be as aesthetic as possible.
    6. Be fully accessible.
    7. Be realized with as little disruption to the on-going function of the school as possible.

Project Rationale

The realization of the Campus Development Plan will allow DIS to continue fulfilling its mission in the following ways:

  1. Protect the long-term interests of DIS through:
    1. Replacing existing obsolete facilities which are inefficient, expensive to maintain, and pose safety concerns with contemporary facilities thereby bringing it in line with today’s educational standards and making it competitive with what comparable schools have to offer.
    2. Developing the capability to internally provide for all core functions needed to allow DIS to operate at its optimal state. (e.g. soccer field, parking, and auditorium.)
  2. Allow DIS to enlarge its enrollment beyond its present capacity in order to facilitate the growing number of children from both mission and business families.
  3. Allow DIS to operate in an environment specifically designed for its needs as opposed to non-educational facilities that have been reconditioned to our needs.
  4. The scheduled order of building will accommodate the need to continue having school and activities during construction.

Project Budget

The total budget for the Dalat Campus Development Plan is just over RM 28 million to be completed in 2018. The good news is that Dalat has or will be able to self-finance over 85% of the projected cost from our reserves and future income. All details and scenarios have been calculated into these costs including professional fees, furnishings, anticipating inflation and GST.

The Dalat Board of Governors and the school administration have jointly decided that the school will not spend more than it has, meaning that we will not borrow large sums of money that will put the school in debt and threaten the organization’s financial resilience. As good stewards we believe this is a principle we must highly value.

As much as it would be desirable to have the needed funds ready right from the start, this is not possible. The business plan includes raising RM 3.5 million from 2015 to 2018. Our first campaign, which ended in December 2016, raised over half that amount. We still have RM 1.5 million to raise during the Continuing the Legacy – Finishing the Task Campaign before the end of 2017.

It is important to note that Dalat International School is an educational trust and operates as a not-for-profit organization. No one benefits from the profits of the school other than Dalat students. Each year Dalat targets a balanced operating budget and generally makes a small profit by the end of each year through cost controls and accountability. Any profits are added to the school’s retained earnings which are used to benefit Dalat students, including this campus development project.

Property Secure Through 2043

Dalat School has rented its current property from the Convent of the Infant Jesus, a group of Catholic Church sisters based in KL, for the last 46 years and has had a long friendly relationship with the Sisters and their work in Malaysia. They also support the work at Dalat International School and are pleased with Dalat’s mission.

In 2015, Dalat signed a multiple tenancy agreement securing the school’s property through 2043. This security gives the school the opportunity to invest in the campus which will be used for Dalat students for many years to come. Although the land is not guaranteed past 2043 the school has every indication from the Sisters that Dalat will continue to fulfill its mission long into the future.

The Campaign

This Capital Campaign to raise RM 1.5 million will finish the job of realizing the campus development plan by 2018 and allow Dalat to complete major construction on three buildings: the Guidance, Media, and Science Center; the Dormitory; and the High School, Administration, and Multipurpose Room.

The RM 1.5 million is the final piece of RM 3.5 million needed to complete the entire development plan by 2018.

RM 3.5 million from donations is the final 13% needed to complete the entire plan; a campus development plan with a cost totaling RM 28 million. The other 87% of development costs will be covered through school savings and building fund fees.
