Pre-Course Requirements:The summer before students enroll in AP English, they must complete a vocabulary study and read two books: a designated novel from our syllabus and one nonfiction text (assignment details posted on DIScourse web page).
This class prepares students to take the AP Language and Composition exam in May. Students study a variety of fiction writing genres, including letters, essays, history, science, politics, and journalism. Students also read through novels and literary texts to provide a well-rounded reading and critical thinking experience. Students write extensively, developing arguments for an array of topics, learning to synthesize sources using the MLA system of documentation, constructing rhetorical analysis pieces, and completing an in-depth study of persuasive writing.
Students study the different organizational strategies of model essays and structure their own writing around these practices. In addition, students learn to quickly identify and emulate rhetorical devices, strategies, and modes to prepare for the AP exam and their future success as writers.
