Mandarin II is a function-based high school course in Modern Standard Chinese, or Putonghua, with a bilingual perspective, which incorporates and integrates topics, structures, grammar, and culture information within a framework based on a communicative approach to language learning.

The emphasis throughout the course is on what students can do using the Chinese language and how they can communicate with Chinese-language speakers in various real-life situations. In Mandarin II, students will build routine sentences and write routine email responses with teacher support. They will narrate the flow of a story based on a picture, using a minimum of 150 words.

Students will engage in conversations, with teacher support, by answering teacher-directed questions. Their reading and listening skills will be at an advanced level from Mandarin I, 50% in English and 50% in Mandarin. For the final project, students will give a cultural presentation on a specified theme, with 80% of the presentation in Mandarin.
