In Grade 8, students will explore the foundational concepts of two of the major branches of science. In the Earth and Space Science branch, they will create models and use argumentation to represent and explain the various processes and resulting phenomena that unfold in the Earth system, in our solar system, and beyond. This includes phenomena such as weather, climate, ocean currents, the rock cycle, plate tectonics and related geological events, natural resource distribution and use, climate change, the effects of gravity and patterns in the solar system.
Within the Life Sciences branch, students will journey to understand, model and explain concepts such as gene mutations, natural selection and adaptation with respect to how these affect the genetic variation evident in all species. Lastly, students will use these genetics concepts as a segue to take an informed big picture look at the topic of Evolution.
