Letter from the Dalat
Board of Governors

Dear Dalat family,

The Dalat board is thankful to our heavenly Father for his guidance and wisdom during our search for the next Head of School. After an extensive selection process conducted over the last 15 months, it is our honor to announce that the Board of Governors has selected Ms. Shawna Wood to become our next Head of School.

Ms. Wood was chosen from a pool of candidates after a thorough review process. This appointment was the result of prayer and God’s leading, that resulted in united and enthusiastic support from the Board of Governors for Ms. Woods. In her we have found a passionate, talented, and godly leader to build upon the many years of Mr. Karl Steinkamp’s inspiring headship.

We are grateful for Ms. Wood’s longstanding and continued commitment to Dalat, and for her willingness to work closely with the Board, the administration and staff to guarantee a seamless transition for our community. Thanks to Ms. Wood’s steadfast service to Dalat over the past 9 years, we are able to offer her the opportunity to assume her new role from a position of great strength and positive momentum.

Ms. Wood has been an experienced educator for 25 years. She has 12 years of experience teaching at the elementary and middle school levels. She served as Elementary Principal for 4 years in Beijing, China, and Middle School Principal at Dalat for 5 years. She has served as Deputy Head of School at Dalat since 2017. She has a strong background in curriculum development and academic principles, as well as understanding the importance of fund raising and sound budgeting.

Ms. Wood has a Master of Education in education administration and a Bachelor of Arts in liberal studies. She is certified as an elementary teacher in California and as a principal through ACSI. As well as participating in Dalat’s accreditation process, she has served on numerous accreditation teams evaluating other independent schools in South East Asia, which speaks to her understanding of the needs of an independent school education.

In selecting Ms. Wood as our next Head of School, we were impressed by the goals she has set to advance the school’s mission.

The Board of Governors extends deep appreciation to the many members of our community — faculty, parents, and alumni — who participated in this process. That involvement made a world of difference and was an outstanding testament to our strong and vibrant community.

As the interview and selection process now officially concludes, the most important work remains. Over the next many months, and during the first year of Ms. Wood’s tenure, the Board will have much to do to ensure a smooth leadership transition and a warm welcome to Ms. Wood in her new role as Head of School. We are in the process of putting together a Transition Committee who will lead the effort to assist Ms. Wood as she guides the school into its next chapter.

We look forward to welcoming Ms. Shawna Wood and to embracing the exciting work still ahead as we continue to meet the needs of our students today, while also ensuring they will enter the world well prepared to serve and lead throughout their lives. The Board of Governors is looking forward to working with Ms. Wood in developing a vision that will move us forward, while preserving the traditions and culture that we all love.

With Gratitude and Hope,
Dalat Board of Governors
