The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.

The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.
Matthew 13:44-46

Our school theme this year is treasure. What do you think of when you hear that word? Money is often the first thing that comes to mind, along with pirates. Some people treasure items of jewelry or family heirlooms. Treasure hunters seek valuables that have been lost for generations.

One of the most famous treasure-hunting expeditions has been the search for the Titanic. People are driven not only to find valuable items such as gold and jewelry, but also a piece of history. It is estimated that 6.5 million USD has been spent on searching for and recovering artifacts from the Titanic. Building the ship cost 1.5 million GBP in the early 1900s, which would be equivalent to about 180 million USD today. People are willing to invest more money in the search than they can ever expect to recover, yet they are still driven to search for it.

In the Matthew parable above, Jesus talked about two men who found a treasure that was invaluable to them. In both cases, they sold everything they had to purchase this treasure. Take a minute to apply this to yourself. What do you value above all else? For what treasure would you be willing to sell everything you own? What treasure would cause you to invest everything you have in a quest to find it?

When I think about the greatest treasures in my life, people are at the top of the list. The logo we have chosen to go along with our theme intentionally shows people. We want to focus on treasuring other people and also helping our kids understand that each of them is a treasure of great worth.
