Think back to a time when you felt truly seen and appreciated.
That’s the environment we want every student to experience at Dalat. Our theme for Bullying Prevention Week, “Treasure People – Say No to Bullying!” is more than just words – it’s a call to action to build a school where everyone thrives.
Bullying remains a pervasive issue within educational settings, with far-reaching consequences for children’s mental health that extend well beyond the immediate context. Research shows that the long-term effects of bullying are profound and multifaceted, influencing emotional, psychological, and social dimensions of well-being.
Victims of bullying are at a heightened risk for developing significant mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders, which can persist into adulthood. These psychological consequences not only diminish the quality of life for individuals but also contribute to chronic mental health disorders that adversely affect social interactions and academic performance. Dalat prioritizes establishing a secure and welcoming atmosphere for all students.
Dalat actively battles bullying through the Three Rs: Recognize, Refuse, Respond. Educating our students to recognize the signs of bullying, refuse to participate, and responding appropriately are key. However, a positive school culture requires more than just reacting to incidents. Our theme this year is centered around the question: what is your treasure? We’re asking our students, staff, and parents to reflect on what truly matters to them. This introspective theme also serves as a call to action, encouraging all of us to recognize the value we bring to one another and to actively participate in creating a positive community rather than waiting on the side as bystanders.
Throughout Bullying Prevention Week, taking place on Dalat from September 23 – 27, we’ll offer activities designed to promote kindness, self-reflection, and understanding. Our lessons will explore the modern forms bullying can take in 2024 and ensure our students are aware of the signs. We’ll also facilitate open dialogues about bullying, aiming to empower everyone with the knowledge and confidence to address it when they see it.
As we participate in Bullying Prevention Week, let’s remember that our journey to a bully-free school requires a collective effort. Educators, students, and parents must roll up our sleeves and get to work. We all have a role to play in creating a safe and supportive environment where everyone is treated with kindness and respect. Let’s build that school together – a place where we “Treasure People and Say No to Bullying!”. Together, we can make a difference!
