It was such a pleasure to be on campus last week and see the many organized service projects happening in the midst of the school day. The middle school students spent all day serving in the Penang community last Thursday. The high school students shared in chapel about their impact trips and even hosted a group of students from Indonesia here last week. These kids had never been on a plane before and were so amazed to be here! Dalat students are great at getting involved in these organized service projects.
However, we also want to encourage the students to put God and others first in the small daily tasks they face. This morning in my SAT group, I noticed that one student held the door for the others while another one pushed in all of the chairs. I’ve challenged the kids to pick up trash around campus, even if it isn’t theirs. Building these habits of service with the students will help them to be servant leaders in the future.
In addition to serving others, we want to see our students put God first in their lives. One small way we do this as a school is to observe the Sabbath. Sabbath was instituted at the very beginning of creation, taking a day to rest and enjoy God’s creation. It has changed a bit over time, but the core goal is still to set aside focused time to put God first. Practically speaking, we do not schedule school events on Sundays. We don’t host sports tournaments, choir performances, or dramas on Sundays. Things still come up occasionally, but we do our best to keep the calendar free. I also encourage the teachers not to answer emails on Sundays as an intentional way to practice Sabbath rest.
At the core, all of these examples are not the most important thing. The attitude of our hearts is much more crucial. When we truly live in humility and value others, our actions will naturally follow.
“Instead of being motivated by selfish ambition or vanity, each of you should, in humility, be moved to treat one another as more important than yourself.” Philippians 2:3

Balanced Life
While living a self-disciplined and balanced life seems like a simple and worthwhile goal, it is quite elusive to many of us.
