Have you ever received an inheritance? The internet is full of stories about crazy things people have inherited, from pets to debts, tools to jewels. When my grandmother passed away several years ago, I was asked to choose a few things from her home to keep. I chose some of her paintings, a Thanksgiving figurine set, and a crystal candy dish. None of these things has any material value. However, they all hold precious memories for me. When I see these things in my home, I remember how much my grandmother loved me. Inheritances generally fall into these two categories, having either sentimental or material value.
The Bible tells us that the greatest inheritance we can ever receive comes from God. It is worth more than gold and will never be consumed or outdated. This inheritance has more than just sentimental or material value because both of those exist for only our time on earth. The greatest inheritance is the gift of salvation and eternal life. It endures beyond death and even past the end of this world.
1 Peter 1:3-4 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy, he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade.
Once we have received this inheritance through faith, we are often tempted to take it for granted. Just like when we buy a new object, the novelty and joy tend to fade after time. The inheritance promised by God does not lose its value; therefore, we should continue to treasure it. This is always at the top of my list when I consider things for which I am grateful. Another action to show that we treasure this gift is sharing it with others and talking about what God has done for us.
As we enter the holiday season with its focus on thankfulness and giving, may we be mindful of the great inheritance we have in Christ. May we be grateful for this gift and also generously share it with others.
While living a self-disciplined and balanced life seems like a simple and worthwhile goal, it is quite elusive to many of us.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
