Resilience is not merely something you “sort of just have” or “don’t have,” but we can learn to develop it in ourselves. More importantly, resilience is something we can help our children learn and develop for themselves.

As we look at the topic of resilience as part of our theme GROW (grateful, resilient, optimistic, willing), we have learned some important lessons. One of the most important lessons so far is that resilience is something that can be learned. Resilience is not merely something you “sort of just have” or “don’t have,” but we can learn to develop it in ourselves. More importantly, resilience is something we can help our children learn and develop for themselves.

In my research about resilience, I came across a book titled “OptionB.” I am not in a position to recommend the book yet, as I have not read it its entirety, but I did come across a short promo video about the book that grabbed my attention. This short video is packed with some pretty powerful lessons.

One of the words you will hear repeatedly in this short, impactful video is the word “strength.” You will hear it mentioned often and one of the more powerful statements made in the video is that “resilience can be strengthened by expressing gratitude for the good things in our lives.” I think it is pretty cool to see how developing our resilience ties back to gratitude which we focused on last quarter. Please do take the time to watch the video, I think it will be worthwhile and may inspire you, like it did me, to look for ways to be grateful in the midst of challenges we face in life.
