“I am very proud of our Dalat students and that so many of them are often involved in events and programs that work with orphanages.”

A number of years ago I had the opportunity to hear Dr. Wes Stafford speak at an education conference. Dr. Stafford was the president and CEO of Compassion International which exists as a Christian child advocacy ministry that releases children from spiritual, economic, social, and physical poverty. Compassion sponsors over 1 million children in 26 countries around the world.

Dr. Stafford challenged us that morning in a powerful way not to forget the little ones and asked why it was that in this world we so quickly forget them. He reminded us that when there is chaos, war, trauma, and other societal problems it is the children who suffer the most. I have often wondered how the current pandemic is impacting the needy families and children around Penang.

As we head into the Christmas season I would encourage the Dalat community to find ways to support ministries that directly help children. I am very proud of our Dalat students and that so many of them are often involved in events and programs that work with orphanages. Dalat has been connected with a number of orphanages around Penang for many years.

One idea to consider would be to visit the Compassion International website and sponsor a child for the coming year. When you sponsor a child you receive information about the child and are encouraged to write letters to him/her. Sponsoring a child can not only be a financial blessing for little ones in poverty but also a very valuable learning experience for your own child. You might also want to consider reading Dr. Stafford’s book “Too Small to Ignore” which tells his story of growing up in Africa and how he became the leader of Compassion International.

As we enter this holiday season, let’s challenge ourselves to really see the families and children around us in need during the hardships of this pandemic and to open our hearts and minds to the true spirit of the Christmas season.
